Safety, liability and the legal edges

A trained dog still carries the owner's legal responsibility. Settle the paperwork before lessons begin.

Dog bite claims are large

The Insurance Information Institute, with State Farm, reported that dog-related injury claims in 2024 totaled $1.57 billion across 22,658 claims, with an average cost of $69,272 per claim. Those figures cover all dogs and show why insurers care about any dog with bite training.

Insurance questions to settle first

  1. Tell your agent the breed and that you are starting protection training. Ask in writing how that affects cover.
  2. Ask about breed or bite-history exclusions. NerdWallet explains how dog bites and homeowners cover interact.
  3. Ask whether an umbrella or standalone animal liability policy is wise.
  4. Check the trainer's own business insurance too.

A protection dog is not a service animal

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service animal is a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks directly related to a person's disability, and an animal providing only emotional support, comfort, therapy or crime prevention does not qualify, as summarised by the ADA National Network. Do not expect a protection-trained dog to be admitted to places that exclude pets.

Safety habits at home

  • Secure the dog before the door opens for deliveries and visitors.
  • Brief children and guests on how to behave around the dog.
  • Keep gates and fences in good repair.
  • Keep local leash, licensing and dangerous-dog rules to hand, since they vary by city and county.
