Process
The stages of protection dog training, in order
Programs differ in detail, but a responsible one climbs the same ladder: control first, drive work last.

Why the order matters
A dog trained to bite on cue but not to release, settle or ignore strangers is a hazard. Responsible programs therefore build what stops the dog before they build what sends it. The sequence below is a general pattern, not a rulebook, and a professional may reorder parts to suit your dog.
The ladder
Foundation obedience
Sit, down, stay, recall and loose-leash walking in distracting places. The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test many owners use as a baseline for manners.
Social stability
Calm exposure to crowds, traffic, visitors and other dogs. A protective dog that overreacts to ordinary life cannot be taken anywhere.
Drive and engagement work
Play with tugs and other rewards teaches the dog to work with a handler, and shows a professional how the dog handles excitement.
Controlled protection work
Under an experienced helper, the dog practices a bark-and-hold or bite exercise and, just as important, letting go and returning on command.
Environmental proofing
The same skills in new places, at different times of day and around the people and animals in your own life.
Where you come in
Each stage ends with the handler repeating the exercise. Expect to be taught your own timing, voice and body position, and expect homework. The commitment page estimates the daily load without inventing figures, because no authority publishes one.
A note on methods
Methods differ between professionals. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior states in its humane dog training position statement that reward-based methods should be used for all dog training. Ask any professional you meet how they build reliability, and note whether the answer matches that position.
Next, compare the two common goals on personal protection versus sport training.
Quick answers
How long does each stage last?
It depends on the dog, the handler and the program. Published norms do not exist, so ask for the professional's own reasoning in writing.
Can a puppy start protection work?
Puppies can start foundation behavior and socialization. Formal protection exercises are normally left for a more mature dog; a professional should decide when.
