Choose a goal
Two roads: household protection or protection sport
They share skills but not purpose. Knowing which road you are on changes the trainer you interview and the questions you ask.
The core difference
Personal protection training aims at a dog that stays neutral around normal life and responds, when directed, to a real threat. Protection sport aims at a dog that performs set exercises in front of a judge. The skills overlap, yet the scoring, the pressure and the end goal differ.
| Personal protection | Protection sport (for example IGP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A stable household dog with directed response | Scored performance in a trial |
| Measured by | The professional's own evaluation | A judge using a published rulebook |
| Where it happens | Everyday settings and scenarios | A trial field with defined exercises |
| Owner role | Daily control and judgment | Handler routine and club training |
What a sport rulebook tells you
The United Schutzhund Clubs of America IGP rulebook sets out three phases: tracking, obedience and protection. A dog must pass a companion-dog test (the BH) before it can enter a title trial, and every phase has to reach at least 70 percent of its points to pass. Reading a real rulebook is a fast way to judge how seriously a sport program takes control.
Other protection sports exist in the United States and each has its own rules. Ask the program which one it follows and request that rulebook.
How to pick
- Choose sport if you enjoy structured practice, club life and measurable progress.
- Choose personal protection if your priority is a household dog with dependable control and a professional who will assess real-life scenarios.
- Choose obedience groundwork first if the dog cannot yet heel, recall and settle in public.
Whichever road you take, read what you will personally have to do on the commitment page.
Quick answers
Do I need a sport title for personal protection?
No. Some households choose sport for the structure, and others never enter a trial.
Can one dog do both?
Some do, but the demands conflict at times. Discuss it openly with a professional before you choose.
