Selection
Vetting the person who will train your dog
There is no single license for private protection trainers in most places. Your own checks do the work a license would do elsewhere.
What credentials can and cannot show
Associations certify police work teams and publish sport rules, but private protection training is not covered by one national standard. The North American Police Work Dog Association states that only an accredited Master Trainer may certify a team and that certification lasts one year, which shows how formal law-enforcement certification is. A private trainer holding no such credential is not automatically unqualified, and one displaying a badge is not automatically good. Judge the work.
Ask to see
- A live session with a dog at your stage, not edited video.
- The exact method used for teaching release and recall.
- Written terms covering price, duration, what happens if the dog is unsuitable and who owns decisions.
- Client references who agree to talk to you.
- Proof of liability insurance for the business.
Questions that separate careful from careless
- How do you decide a dog is not suited for this work?
- What would make you stop a program?
- Who works the dog during bite exercises, and with what experience?
- How do you teach me to handle the dog afterward?
Warning signs
- Promises of a guaranteed result or a fixed finish date.
- Reluctance to let you watch a session.
- Fear-based marketing about threats.
- Pressure to pay in full before an evaluation.
K9PN does not recommend an individual trainer on this site. When you request a referral, treat the professional who calls as a candidate and run the checks above. For the money side of any agreement, read the liability page as well.
Quick answers
Should I choose board-and-train or private lessons?
Either can work. Board-and-train can speed groundwork, but private lessons keep you in the loop. Make sure you are taught to handle the dog in both cases.
Is a longer track record always better?
Experience helps. Still, verify that the person who will actually work your dog is the one with it.
Ready to talk to someone local?
Send a request and K9PN will refer it to an independent professional or program that covers your ZIP code.
